#Amazon is discounting us to death http://gu.com/p/36yje no, new authors DON'T need you, consumers & authors have moved on

@thistleweb I agree concerning Amazon's unfair practices, foremost tax evasion, but I disagree that physical bookstores are necessary.

@thistleweb Least of all to "nurture new authors", Amazon is far more welcoming to new authors than the traditional publishers.

@kevingranade all corps evade tax, none should, but they all do it, #Amazon did to them, what they did to independents some years back

@kevingranade now that ebook readers are affordable for many, and mature enough to be light, reliable etc, physical is just nostalgia

    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair Kevin Granade

@kevingranade his complaint is that they've held onto nostalgia while customers & new writing blood have evolved beyond them

@kevingranade Waterstones have the brand recognition, they could have adapted & embraced ebooks & new writers; they didn't

@thistleweb true, the problem is that Amazon is so big and expanding into so much commerce that the impact is frightening.

@kevingranade the internet destroys some business models, Amazon is just one of the wrecking balls that corps have to adapt to or die

@thistleweb Blame the publishers for not selling what the consumer wants. I want a $10 paperback that fits in my pocket, not a $30 hardback.

@thistleweb I'm not worried about retailers, I'm worried about what buying things will look like if Amazon captures most of the market.

@jezra another one? I though I was the only one who hates overpriced uncomfy to read hardbacks

    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair jezra

@jezra indies selling point is a huge range, Waterstones gradually shifted more to less range, bulk, mainstream, losing value along the way

    • Gordon Sinclair Gordon Sinclair jezra

@jezra I don't remember ever buying a hardback, ever, I've borrowed them before, but paperbacks are not only lighter, cheaper & comfier

@kevingranade people say "support your high street" but act by choosing best value, which isn't the high street

@kevingranade the anti-supermarket protests complain but consumers vote with their wallets and purses

@jezra Can't really feel sorry for Waterstones since their stores are shit!

@jezra I love carrying a library in one device, with the ability to scale the font size and never deal with the spine folding on an ebook

    • jezra jezra Shane Marks

@smarks can't say I know what Waterstones is. A large book retailer?

    • jezra jezra

@thistleweb exactly. I go to the bookstore to see if the book I want is in paperback yet. Nope, Just a lot of hardbacks taking up room

@jezra Yeah it's like Easons.... if that's in the US. Maybe similar to Barnes & Noble... never been in one, but they look similar.

@thistleweb that's what I want as well, but I'm only going to settle for a GNU/Linux device so I might have to wait for a long time.

@jezra every ereader is embedded linux, but I know what you mean

@thistleweb if I can't access a terminal and have the freedom to install what I want, it isn't Linux
