@nybill hey, electrical question for you: in a 110 outlet the ground plug goes on bottom, right?

@jk Wiring it up? Its a green screw connected to the metal harness.

@nybill right, but the orientation of the plug, I mean. They put all new outlets in kitchen renovation & they look upside down to me.

@jk Ah, there is no rule (There is a new Code book out. Maybe there is a rule now I don't know about yet?) Yea, I put the ground down.

@nybill ok I'll ask the builder about it. One of his guys might have just done it backwards. Rest of house has ground down.

@jonkulp @nybill I would think ground down would make more sense, physics-wise, based on how the plug interacts with the outlet.

@jonkulp @nybill The way most wall warts are designed, I think they'd support themselves better with ground down. :)

@windigo yeah that's how my dad explained it to me when I was replacing a bunch of outlets at a previous house. @nybill

@jk Unless its a new NEC (National electric code). Which I doubt. Most people put them down. Unless the house is all up (then match existing

@windigo One guy wanted all ground up in his shop. He said once a band saw blade fell behind a plug and shocked someone.

@jk @nybill The way I understand it, ground is supposed to be on top. People like it on the bottom. Looks "right" b/c it resembles a face.

@jk @nybill While rare, there have been accidents where something hit the top of a plug not in all the way, completing the circuit.

@jk @nybill A woman died when her necklace hit it. She was searching for something under her desk at work.

@johnnynull You know this for fact? (someone could be shocked, the breaker should trip. But, to die you need to pull amps through your body)

@nybill It was apparently big news. Discussed with the Elders while we were building the dojo.

@johnnynull Ok. It can happen. But, that would be quite a rare one.

@nybill No doubt. I imagine that's what made it a memorable story.

Hmm. Fix the "loose saw blades" problem, or turn the outlets upside down? I wonder...

@misstech haha it got a bit derailed after a while, kinda like in the linux outlaws forum threads. Fun times.

@johnnynull there are rails, so we know what is on topic, and should be avoided

      Ah, THAT makes sense!

    • x1101 x1101 johnnynull

@johnnynull how can we be off topic, if we don't know what on topic is?

    • johnnynull johnnynull x1101

@x1101 That is the obvious and solid logic Douglas Adams would've high-fived you for.
