Either I am doing something wrong or my charcoal grill is designed terribly, because I cannot get it to stay lit for shit.

@x1101 Get a chimney starter. I'll never go back! Three pieces of news paper and its lit: http://ur1.ca/9tocr

@nybill did you make your own?

@jk Nah, they are cheap enough. They are worth it not to have to use lighter fluid chemicals every time.

@x1101 @nybill I had one of those, it was great. the one I had rusted out pretty quick, though. good for cooking on cedar planks, too

@jrobb Yea, mine is still kicking. ~5yrs now. The grate at the bottom starts to deform from the heat. But, its still holding up.

@x1101 and now I've got a propane grill because I never had much luck with the charcoal (or it just took too long for the wife)

Chimney starters work great. My father-n-law has an electric starter that works extremely well too. http://url.jpope.org/qa

@nybill maybe mine didn't last because I kept it outside. it was cool while I had it. but my grill also fell apart (got it for free haha)

@nybill after doing some reading, I am totally sold on getting one...

@x1101 They have them in the big box hardware stores.

@nybill and I have one of each within striking distance. Any suggestions on brands, either for the chimney or a grill (low cost to start)

@x1101 Not sure how low dollar you are wanting but, I bought my Weber grill in the late 90’s. Still perfectly usable. ;-)

@x1101 You know those stores. They only have 1 brand of anything. :/ I only recall mine being ~$15. "charbroil" brand or something...

@nybill saw this with window AC units, everywhere had units with same price/performance, but sourced from a single, different manufacturer.

@johnnynull nah, I really like the charcoal thing, if I can get it to work right...

@x1101 Yeah, me too. Wood is nearly worth the hassle, too.

@kevingranade They buy in such bulk to their distribution centers I'm sure they have a lot of pull with manufacturers.

@x1101 one caution with those though. Pay attention to the wind when pouring the lit coals out. Sparks fly! We can't have you beardless. ;)

That’s a shame, I can’t attest to their propane grills but, the charcoal ones have been good to me. ;) http://url.jpope.org/qd

@jpope the prob with mine is the heat shield rusted out. Need to fab a new one, or just get a charcoal grill :D

@x1101 same thing happened to ours. I scavenged one from neighbor's trash that will fit with only minor mods.

@jk my father in law and I are probably going to fab one. But I am still loving the charcoal. There is something about the simplicity I dig.
